Here we are in July - the month in which we all welcome summer time with the expectation that we will revel in our patriotic spirit and willingly accept the carefree attitude that summer always undoubtedly brings. It is the time every year that we let the revelry and spirit of summer and our nation’s holiday take hold of us. Simply put - July is when we celebrate – with our family, friends, and community - and the Harbor Lights Theater Company’s production of The Music Man is THE way to
do just that.
Topping off its energetic first season of enriching the local cultural scene by bringing "Broadway to Staten Island" and BEYOND, the Harbor Lights Theater Company presents THE MUSIC MAN. Directed by Broadway Director Ray Roderick (Associate Director of the 2000 Broadway revival of The Music Man, A Christmas Carol, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), starring Broadway Helen Hayes Award Winning Actor, Patti Mariano who, having made her Broadway debut as a child in the original production of The Music Man starring Robert Preston and Barbara Cook, is thrilled to be returning in the role of Mrs. Paroo, Tony-nominated Larry Marshall (SI resident and veteran of 14 Broadway shows), Rebecca Baxter (Broadway's Jekyll
and Hyde, Meet Me In St. Louis, Cinderella at New York City Opera) and Jay Montgomery (Broadway's Falsettos, Heart Strings National Tour). Completing the Creative Team are: Choreography by Broadway vet and former Bob Fosse Associate, life-long SI resident, Mimi Quillin. Scenic Design, Samuel Froeschle, Costumes, Andrea Hood, and Sound Design, TK.
The music is the star of this hugely successful 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small
Midwestern town. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Hill) and "'Til There Was
You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Marian) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who
covered it on their first album.
Meredith Wilson's The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for
a boy's band he vows to organize. He is transformed into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.
From the minute preparations began for The Music Man, artistic directors of the HTLC, Tamara Jenkins and Jay Montgomery, began reaching out to local
community theater professionals to give them the opportunity to perform in a Broadway classic. Twenty eight local actors, dancers and children from throughout
the borough were selected by director Ray Roderick for this production. Mr. Roderick expressed his amazement at the level of talent he found at HLTC local auditions. “I was very excited to see so many interesting and talented performers of all ages turn out for our Music Man auditions in Staten Island.” The addition of Patti Mariano from the original 1958 Broadway production was icing on the cake and just the right touch of nostalgia we were looking for.
What makes this show a must see is Harbor Light's ability to bring together a variety of talent - both local stars and Broadway veterans. The audience will share in a unique theatrical experience in which Broadway will shine in our historic Snug Harbor's Music Hall. The Susan E. Wagner Marching Band is sure to capture hometown pride, as is the thrill of seeing a national baton twirling champion. “We
are bringing our nation’s finest to work with our community's best; and Staten Island has a chance to see a first class production at an affordable price in their own
backyard,” commented Tamara Jenkins and Jay Montgomery
The Music Man, by Meredith Willson, will be produced from July 8 -17, 2011 on the grounds of the beautiful Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island, just minutes
from the Staten Island Ferry.
